Split Billing

  • Fixed an issue with split-billing invoices. A matter split between two payers could bill an incorrect amount.
  • Fixed an issue with split-billing automatic bookkeeper payments.
  • Fixed an issue with backup funds and party-specific money.
  • A party's invoice no longer shows the other party's balances. Each invoice lists only the retainer, trust, and escrow funds that belong to the party receiving it.
  • Fixed an issue with party-specific expenses.
  • Fixed an issue with re-issuing a split invoice. A re-issue could compute a party's share on the wrong base and subtract that party's payments incorrectly. Re-issued split invoices now match the original to the cent. Non-split re-issues are unchanged.
  • Invoices now label the fund each automatic payment came from. Instead of always printing "New Payment from Retainer", it now prints one line per fund, using your own fund labels from Settings.

Invoicing and Trust

  • Fixed an issue with deleting a payment not removing the associated deposit in your internal accounts register.
  • Fixed an issue with global automatic bookkeeper backup account settings.
  • LEDES exports no longer put thousands separators in rate fields. Some e-billing systems rejected files with "1,000.00" in a rate column.

Under the Hood

  • A new platform release underneath 6.2.4. TimeNet Law has been tooled and recompiled with a new framework that brings current macOS APIs, a newer rendering and printing path, and fixes to drag and drop on macOS 27.2 that were outside the code. Every window, report, invoice path, and the print panel were exercised on the new build before release.
  • Large matters open much faster. A 2,800-entry matter that took 27 seconds to open now opens in about 3 seconds, and date columns sort instantly.

Everything Else

  • Renaming an entry topic no longer wipes topics or calendar links from existing entries
  • Drag and drop works again on macOS 27.2

TimeNet Law 6.2.3

Released October 13th, 2026

QUICK CONFLICT FIX

  • Fixed a bug that could cause conflict check to miss certain conflicts. A flaw in how TimeNet Law indexed party names let one client's parties overwrite another's, so the check could flag conflicts that weren't real and, worse, miss ones that were. It is fixed, and it was tested against deliberately conflicting clients. Open the Conflict Report once after updating and review anything new.
  • Conflicts now show up where you work. When a client has an unwaived conflict, its icon in the main window turns into a red circle with a white exclamation point, in both the regular and compact views. Hover over it to see the conflict in a sentence. Click it to open the Conflict Report. Waive the conflict and the icon goes back to normal.
  • Every conflict now explains itself in plain English, like "Client Acme Holdings is listed as a conflicting party on client Jane Rivera." The report, its right-click menu, and the main window all use the same sentence.
  • Online payments post to your books automatically again. Since 6.2, Slipstream payments stopped posting on their own, and you have been entering them by hand. They now post within about 15 minutes, with a notification. Payments made before you install this update are left alone, so nothing you already entered is posted twice. Two things worth doing: compare your Stripe dashboard with the Payment Center for any online payment since July that never got entered, and if an eCheck is still clearing when you update, enter it by hand when it clears. On a firm with several Macs, only one Mac posts payments, so nothing posts twice.
  • New: Matter Rate. Give a matter its own hourly rate in Matter Settings > Rate Settings, and every new entry on that matter uses it, no matter who logs the time. It overrides the client's rate and every timekeeper rate. Leave it blank to keep using your client and timekeeper rates, or set it to $0.00 for a pro bono matter. Existing entries are never changed. Requested by a customer, and it is exactly as useful as they said. The iPhone app picks it up in iOS 1.4.2.
  • Your user badge now sits at the bottom of the main window, in every view, with a shortcut to your user settings in its menu.
  • Preferences is now Settings, with a new icon, to match macOS.

Invoicing and Trust

  • Percentage discounts now print their cents. A 5% discount of $1,754.79 printed on the invoice as $1,754.00, while your books correctly used $1,754.79, so the printed total could be off by up to 99 cents from what TimeNet Law said was owed. If a client paid the printed total, the difference is those missing cents. Re-issue the invoice to reprint it correctly.
  • Automatic payments from trust now pay invoices with percentage discounts in full. The Automatic Bookkeeper subtracted the discount twice when working out what to draw, so it under-paid those invoices and left a balance behind.
  • Contingency fee percentages print with their decimals: 33.33% no longer shows as 33%
  • Cancel now protects billed entries. Deleting a mix of unbilled and billed entries could delete the billed ones even if you clicked Cancel on the "Delete Billed Entries" warning.
  • A matter's own time rounding now works. Rounding set in Matter Settings was never applied, so entries rounded to the firm setting instead. It also now works when the matter rounds more finely than the firm.
  • A late fee you remove stays removed. Deleting the most recent late fee on an invoice could bring it back the next day.
  • Setting a trust or escrow minimum in Payment Center no longer stops automatic payments. The client now starts from your firm-wide Automatic Bookkeeper settings instead of blank ones.
  • You'll be told when an online payment is more than the invoice balance, for example when a client pays an older link after the invoice was re-issued, so you can refund or apply the difference.
  • Matter budgets with a Starting On date now count only work from that date. The budget bar shows the right percentage, and the automatic over-budget discount applies only to unbilled work over the budget. It could discount a matter's entire history.
  • Expenses created from Accounting stay tied to the right transaction. Deleting or editing one could remove or change a different Accounting transaction, the one belonging to the last entry in that matter. If you have deleted expenses that came from Accounting, look over your register for a transaction that shouldn't be there, or one that should.

Oasis

  • Oasis logs time to the matter it names. Logging time, opening a matter, and creating a task could act on the last matter you discussed instead.
  • Creating a task from Oasis creates the task, and asking Oasis to send an email opens it for you to review and send. Actions Oasis can't do yet are no longer offered, so it never reports something done that wasn't.
  • Clear Chat now clears the conversation Oasis remembers, not just the screen
  • Receipt Drop no longer charges tax twice. If you bill tax on expenses, the expense is now filled in before the receipt's own tax, and your tax is added on the invoice. Firms that don't bill tax on expenses still get the full receipt total.
  • Oasis tells you when it can't read a document (a password-protected PDF, an image with no readable text, or a file that takes too long), instead of answering without it
  • Time Drop's Select File button reads time logs, not receipts
  • Briefing emails describe accurately how they're delivered

Everything Else

  • Reminders understand you either way. "Remind me in 5 minutes to call Lisa" works as well as "remind me to call Lisa in 5 minutes," and the reminder no longer repeats the whole command back to you.
  • Reminder notifications show your full text instead of cutting it off after one line
  • Abbreviations keep their capitals in reminders and imported entries: FCC, ABA, and 10-K stay FCC, ABA, and 10-K
  • Creating a new timekeeper rate from Client Info no longer crashes, and the new rate is saved to the client
  • Dragging a client onto a client category in the sidebar works again, and dragging it onto All Clients removes its category
  • Deleting a client category no longer deletes your last Smart Group
  • Renaming or removing an entry topic in Matter Settings updates your entries correctly and keeps their calendar links
  • Make Matter Inactive works on every matter, including ones never opened in a matter window
  • Matters with invoices can only be made inactive, never deleted
  • Delete Theme deletes the invoice theme you highlighted
  • The Contacts group you choose in Settings now sticks, and Client Info lists only that group's contacts
  • New Folder, Move Document, and Copy Document work in the main window's Documents view
  • Entry topics display cleanly in the matter window
  • Send Feedback fills in your email address for you
  • The Conflict Report shows the correct matter name for both sides of a conflict

TimeNet Law 6.2.2

Released October 7th, 2026

CLEAN BOOKS EDITION

  • 6.2.1 closed most of the paths that let the Automatic Bookkeeper spend retainer money that wasn't there. One path survived. This release closes it, and puts a hard floor under every automatic payment so it can't happen again. It also fixes everything you reported since July: billing, launch, sync, calendar, and the reports your trust accounting depends on. Every fix in this update was tested on a real firm's data before it shipped. If you have ever written to me about a problem, there is a good chance it is fixed below.
  • Pay buttons now lead your invoice emails. The Pay by Card and Pay by eCheck buttons used to sit below your message, so a long signature or confidentiality notice pushed them out of sight and clients reported them missing. They now sit at the top of the email, with the invoice number and amount due, and the inbox preview line shows both. A batch of invoices to one client reads like a statement summary.
  • New in Launchpad Settings: Show Inactive Clients. Time entered for inactive clients now appears on the Launchpad calendar when you want it to, so the calendar's daily totals match your timekeeper reports. It applies to this Mac only and is off by default.
  • Trust is now available as your backup account in the Automatic Bookkeeper. Firms that pay from Unapplied Credits first can now fall back to Trust, firm-wide, the same way they always could per client.

Trust and Retainer Accounting

  • Re-issuing an invoice can no longer pay it with retainer or trust money that was already spent. When you applied a matter's retainer to an invoice by hand in the Payment Center, especially from the TOTAL row, the Automatic Bookkeeper still counted that money as available. A later re-issue could pay the invoice in full from it, and the matter account went negative. The Automatic Bookkeeper now counts every payment drawn from an account, however it was recorded, and checks the real balance again at the moment it writes a payment.
  • No automatic payment can take an account below zero. Every automatic draw, in the Payment Center, Create Invoice, re-issues, and One Click Billing, is capped at what the account actually holds. Ordinary low balances work exactly as before. If an account is already negative from the old bug, TimeNet Law tells you once, pauses automatic payments from that account, and changes nothing.
  • Re-issuing with the preview open now applies your available funds. The preview showed the payment, but the re-issued invoice could go out without it and the money never moved. The final invoice and the preview now agree, and the new payment is listed under New Since Last Billing.
  • A client's own Automatic Bookkeeper rules now beat the firm-wide setting. A client set to pay from Unapplied Credits first could have Trust drawn down instead, whenever the firm-wide setting named Trust.
  • Write-offs no longer post to your deposit account. With a default deposit account set, every write-off was recorded there as a deposit of money you never received. Entries made before this update are not changed automatically. If you reconcile that account against a bank statement, contact me and I will help you find them.
  • Hold ABK Transfers is fully honored during invoicing again. Firms that hold transfers no longer see stored fund balances adjusted while an invoice is being created.
  • Joint invoices draw trust once. A joint invoice with an open prior balance could pay that prior balance once per matter. Each child matter now also credits the correct invoice.
  • The Retainer Funds In and Out report and the Monthly Client Report now put every payment in the right account. Payments made from the Payment Center's TOTAL row were reported as Trust withdrawals, and some older payments were reported as Escrow. Both reports now classify exactly the way the bookkeeping engine does.
  • Balance reconciliation can no longer inflate a client's funds when a matter file can't be read
  • A taxed invoice's stored balance now includes the tax from the moment it is created

Invoicing

  • One Click Billing bills split matters correctly. A matter split between outside payers could bill the client for the whole amount, and on a three-way split the first party got no invoice while its time was still marked billed.
  • Split-billing invoices show the amount due on the balance stamp, not the invoice date. Automatic stamps now choose Paid or Balance from the party's own balance.
  • The live invoice preview can no longer move real money, loop a warning that locks the window, or advance your next invoice number.
  • Invoice previews render reliably. Machines that showed a blank white preview while the PDF printed fine now show the preview every time, and any failure now explains itself instead of showing a white window.
  • Automatic payments created by an invoice are always listed in its payment history
  • The Email to Client checkbox now tells you why it is unavailable: no email address on file, email turned off for that client, or the client record not found
  • A clear message when email can't be sent, telling you whether it's your license or your internet connection

Launch and Stability

  • The loading bar that fills, resets, and never finishes is gone. One unreadable matter file, often a soft-deleted matter or a cloud file that hadn't finished downloading, could end the startup load and restart it forever. Some databases also triggered a reload loop all by themselves. Loading now skips anything it can't read, says so in the log, and always finishes. If loading ever fails repeatedly, TimeNet Law stops and tells you exactly where.
  • No more launch crash when Wi-Fi isn't connected yet.
  • No more launch crash if you decline macOS access to your Dropbox folder.
  • Firm settings recover from their backup when a cloud service is caught mid-sync, instead of loading an empty firm. Automatic settings repair is now safe when several Macs relaunch at once.
  • One unreadable file can no longer stop automatic backups for the rest of the session, or make Oasis report zero receivables
  • Reports no longer fail when another Mac saves settings while they run
  • Renaming a client no longer hides similarly named clients until the next reload
  • A matter window opened during startup no longer leaves the rest of the firm showing old totals
  • An oversized local preferences file now repairs itself in under a second
  • An unreadable settings file shows a clear message instead of crashing at launch

Matters, Settings, and Sync

  • New matters can no longer reuse an existing matter number. A relaunch, or another Mac or your iPhone saving settings, could hand out a number that was already taken. Matter numbers now account for every matter already in your database.
  • Custom practice areas can no longer revert to the default list. Two pairs of default practice areas also shared an internal ID, so a matter could show the wrong one or a blank. After updating, any matter showing the wrong practice area needs it selected once, and it will hold.
  • Change Rate of Selected Entries now sticks on networked databases
  • "Markdown" is now one word everywhere it appears, including the audit trail

Calendar and Tasks

  • Editing an entry from the Launchpad calendar no longer sets its rate to $0.00.
  • To-do dates read correctly: tomorrow says Tomorrow, midnight is not overdue, and today's client anniversaries stay on today
  • Calendar sync no longer strips sync links in bulk when it can't see your calendar
  • Deleting an internal to-do, converting an event to an internal task, and moving an entry to another matter all work again

If the Old Bug Already Touched Your Books

  • This update stops new phantom payments. It does not remove ones already recorded, because only you should decide what changes in your ledger. If a re-issue paid an invoice from a retainer that was empty, open the Payment Center, find that Automatic Bookkeeper payment, and delete it. The invoice balance and the retainer return to their correct amounts. If you'd like help finding them, write to me and we'll do it together.

TimeNet Law 6.2.1

Released July 30th, 2026

RAID EDITION

  • This release exists to exterminate the bugs that found their way into TimeNet Law during the recent development sprint. Version 6 brought the largest changes in this application's history, quickly followed up by two more massive updates (Oasis and Slipstream). The new framing allowed some new bugs through that had no business reaching your firm. So I spent the last month running a full audit through the application, researching bug reports, and investigating cracks in the foundation. Everything that audit found is now fixed. Three new things made the cut alongside the repairs. But this is mostly a "NO NEW FEATURES" update. If you know, you know.
  • Bring your whole firm over from Clio, or another billing system. The new Import Database window reads full CSV contact and matter exports and builds your clients and matters in TimeNet Law. It detects the Clio format, and other common formats, and maps the fields for you, and any other billing system's CSV can be mapped by hand. You see exactly what will be created before anything is written, and a backup runs first.
  • Choose what opens when you double-click a client. Client Settings, Matters, Invoices, or Timeline. Set it once in App Settings and every client opens the way you actually work.
  • Show or hide LEDES Task Code categories per matter. Now you can customize which Task Code categories you use per matter, not just globally.

Bulletproof Billing

  • A class of annoying bugs has been rounded up and squashed. An invoice could end up showing a zero or negative balance while the entries it billed quietly went back to unbilled. Every path that could cause this has been closed. If you have seen it, your data is recoverable: contact support and I will restore it, to the penny. In addition:
  • Re-issued invoices apply only funds that actually exist every time. Re-issuing could post a retainer payment drawn against money that was not in the account under specific conditions.
  • Re-issuing always uses the correct invoice number. Automated re-issues could run under a blank number and leave the original unsettled.
  • Editing a billed time entry no longer returns it to unbilled. Opening a billed entry and clicking OK, even with nothing changed, could sometimes unbill it. Entries billed to a group invoice are protected too.
  • Fund balances are now read from your ledger on-the-fly, rather than a stored figure that could drift out of step with it over time

Entering Time from the Launchpad

  • The error when creating or editing time from the Launchpad, Launchbar, or the Client Info Window is gone. Time entries, tasks, and to-dos created from the outside of a matter window could sometimes throw an error and then fail to save. They now save correctly and appear everywhere they should.
  • Double-clicking an Apple Calendar event creates its time entry cleanly
  • The Task field on a time entry saves, and is still there when you reopen it

Your Firm Settings Secured

  • Firm settings no longer revert to defaults under rare sync and race conditions. TimeNet Law now keeps a separate protected copy of your settings, checks it on every launch, and restores it silently if anything is wrong. No dialog, no support call.
  • New and demo databases no longer show a warning about an empty settings file

Speed

  • Launch is fast again on large databases. Firms with thousands of matters could wait thirty seconds or more at every launch. It is back to a few seconds, the way it should be.
  • No more false network warnings on cloud databases. Firms whose data folder lives in iCloud Drive or Dropbox could be told the networked database was unreachable when it was perfectly fine. TimeNet Law now waits for the cloud folder instead of assuming the worst.

Sync Warnings That Mean Something

  • The sync warning now only appears when something is genuinely missing. It used to fire whenever your cloud service left a conflict file behind, which is almost always harmless. Now TimeNet Law reads those files, and speaks up only if one contains work that is not in your data. When it does, it offers to restore just the missing data.

Payment Center

  • Checking and unchecking invoices updates the payment amount again when you are paying from a trust or retainer account
  • New in App Settings: choose whether invoices with a balance start out checked when you create a payment. Most firms want them checked. Some don't. Now it is your call.
  • Fixed the amount recorded to an internal account when depositing part of a payment
  • Applying available funds now plans from your true ledger balance

Invoices, Importing, and Elsewhere

  • Retainer, trust, and escrow balance lines no longer print twice on an invoice
  • Importing a CSV from inside a matter no longer asks you to map a Matter column. The matter you are in is the matter it imports to.
  • Import Entries now maps your columns every time. Choosing Import Entries from the File menu used to assume one fixed column order and imported anything else as garbled entries. It now opens the same review and mapping window you get by dragging a file onto a matter.
  • Control Center change lists now show the client beside the matter, so a generically named matter is no longer a guessing game
  • Sorting the time list by rate now puts each rate group in date order, which makes a pre-billing review much faster
  • Emailed invoices and Oasis letters now honor the setting that sends a copy to your firm, and those copies appear in the Email Log Report, every time

Fixes & Improvements

  • Fixed the "Update Required" screen that would not clear. If your data folder had not finished syncing, TimeNet Law could tell you your Mac needed updating when it did not, and there was no way past it but force-quitting the app. That screen is now honest about what it actually found, re-checks itself every few seconds, and clears on its own the moment your data arrives.
  • Real recovery options if it ever does appear. Check Again, Re-Sync from Dropbox, and Choose a Different Data Folder are all one tap away, so a stuck screen is something you can fix yourself.
  • Dropbox sync no longer skips a file silently. A download that failed could leave a permanent gap in your phone's copy of your data, one that later syncs would never go back and fill. Failed downloads are now retried, and a sync that cannot finish says so instead of quietly reporting success.
  • Added a safety limit on sync cleanup. If a sync ever asks to remove a large share of your local data in one pass, TimeNet Law keeps the data and tells you, rather than carrying it out.
  • Choosing a data folder now confirms it really is a TimeNet Law Data folder before switching to it

TimeNet Law 1.4 for iPhone & iPad

The Biggest Mobile Release Yet

  • Create matters and clients from your phone. Open a new matter or a new client at intake, in the elevator, wherever the work finds you. Numbering, rates, and folders stay in perfect sync with your Mac.
  • Slipstream payment links. Long-press any unpaid invoice to copy a card or eCheck payment link. Text it to your client and get paid. Read the Slipstream guide.
  • Your timer on the lock screen. A running timer now lives on the lock screen and Dynamic Island with the task, matter, and client at a glance.
  • Apple Calendar sync. Pick a calendar once in Settings and your time entries appear as events automatically.
  • Tasks and events. Manage any entry as a task with due dates, priorities, and reminders, in full sync with the Mac's Task Manager.
  • Document tags. Tags now appear in the Documents view, color dot and all.

Introducing Slipstream

  • Your invoices, paid online. Slipstream adds Pay by Card and Pay by eCheck buttons to every invoice you email. Clients pay by credit card, Apple Pay, or their bank account on a secure checkout page, and get an email receipt automatically.
    • Payments post themselves to the right invoice on the right matter, and TimeNet Law notifies you the moment money arrives
    • Right-click any invoice to copy a payment link, ready to paste into an email or text, or to take a card over the phone

New Features

  • Automations on your calendar. Month View now shows scheduled automations in their own color, marked with a gear icon, so you can see your scheduled intelligence right beside your events.
    • Only automations that are on and will actually run are shown
    • Click an automation to edit it, or hover for a summary of its schedule, scope, and last run
    • One-time automations stay visible on their scheduled date after they run
  • Right-click any day. Right-click empty space in Day, Week, or Month view to create a New Entry, a New Reminder, or a New Automation, pre-set to that date. Build an automation right where you can see it on the calendar.
  • Send Email automations. The email automation is no longer just for reminders. Give it any instructions, like “provide a case overview, recent updates, and next steps,” and it drafts the communication on schedule.
  • New safeguards for shared databases. TimeNet Law now detects cloud-sync conflicts and billing data that was overwritten by an out-of-date computer, and warns you when a matter is opened, with the specifics named so nothing is silently lost.
  • LEDES categories per matter. Show or hide LEDES categories on a matter-by-matter basis.
  • Improved Draft command in Launchbar. Better drafting from a voice or typed command (requires Oasis).

Performance

  • Opening matters is faster, especially matters with many file reminders
